Das NIST hat den Gewinner des SHA-3 Wettbewerbs bekannt gegeben und damit den Nachfolger von SHA-2 festgelgt. Es ist der Algorithmus Keckak (gesprochen catch-ack) geworden und dieser ist nicht mit der bisherigen SHA-Familie verwand. Insbesondere Letzteres wird auch von vielen namhaften Cryptologen wie etwa Bruce Schneier gelobt und lässt dadurch die bisher bekannten Angriffsvektoren für die MD4, MD5, SHA-1 und SHA-2 Familien ins Leere laufen.
