Hallo zusammen,
seit ich von Ubuntu 6.06LTS auf 8.04LTS nochgezogen habe, stelle ich einen Dienst fest (udevd), der wahnsinnig viel Leistung zieht:

Für was ist der da und kann man den nicht irgendwie abschalten?

devfs gibt es nicht mehr, daher musst udev genutzt werden. Die Entwicklungen beim OS der Wahl sollte man schon etwas verfolgen, wenn man Server administriert...

ok, ein Versäumnis meinerseits. Nur: jetzt kann ich leider nicht viel rumtun mit Lernen (so gerne ich das wollte), sondern muss eine Lösung finden, wieso die Last so hoch ist. Das System neu zu installieren sollte 2. Wahl sein!

Durchsuche den Ubuntu-Bugtracker und lies die udev-Docs. Wenn Du das nicht willst/kannst, dann setze die Kiste neu auf und hoffe, dass das Problem dadurch (vorläufig) verschwindet. Ohne Logs und tiefgreifende Infos zum System (Hard/Software) kann man Dir bei diesem Problem aus der Ferne nunmal nicht helfen.

Ok! Die Kiste läuft ja soweit einmal (wenn auch sehr rechenintensiv)! Welche Logs würdest du durchforsten?

Alle Logs die direkt in /var/log liegen, insbesondere /var/log/messages. Irgendwo hat das System Aua (vermutlich Hardware oder Kernel) und udev muss es ausbaden...

Angeblich soll das bei Ubuntu für das Phänomen verantwortlich sein! Jedenfalls ist das im Ubuntu-Forum zu lesen! Ob ich es bisher nutzte oder nicht, kann ich wie rausfinden?

evms ist ein Volume Manager ähnlich wie LVM. Wenn Du irgendwelche Volumes auf Deinem Server angelegt hast, solltest Du das eigentlich wissen - von daher gehe ich mal davon aus, dass Du ihn nicht nutzt und getrost entsorgen kannst.

Dann weg damit, so es sich denn deinstallieren lässt. Sollte man heute eh nicht mehr einsetzen, LVM2 wird aktiver weiterentwickelt und ist besser in den Kernel integriert (Device Mapper Schnittstelle).

Besten Dank für Eure Mithilfe. Meine oben genannten Arbeitsschritte und ein Reboot haben das Problem gelöst. Der Rechenr langweilt sich wieder und die hohe Last gehört der Vergangenheit an.
Dinge gibt es, auf die muss man erst mal kommen. So ein angeblich so leichtes dist-upgrade hat ganz schön Nacharbeit verursacht. Aber wenigstens kann ich jetzt besser schlafen...

Die Ubuntu-Entwickler haben bei den letzten beiden Releases ziemlich viele (in meinen Augen zu viele) Kompromisse in puncto Kernel-Stabilität gemacht. Auch in 8.10 ist wieder ein Kernel (2.6.27) eingegangen, der zum Zeitpunkt des Freeze noch gar nicht released war. Der Fokus liegt klar darauf, möglichst viele neue Treiber mit reinzubekommen (insb. Wifi & Co), aber dieser "Wettbewerbsvorteil" hilft einem bei Servern nicht weiter, wenn dafür grundlegende Dinge nicht funktionieren :twisted:
@Joe User: Auch bei Gentoo findest Du noch die EVMS-Userland-Pakete und AFAIR bei den Docs sogar ein HowTo. Der Unterschied: das Zeugs kommt nicht ungefragt auf den Rechner, man muss es schon wollen

Ich weiss, aber Letzteres ist der springende Punkt.
