Kernel 2.4.32 & Suse 9.3

Hi,

Hat den da schon jemand zum laufen bekommen?
Ich teste das grad erstmal unter vmware, aber bisher no chance.

Das make bzImage & make modules laufen einbahnfrei durch, aber beim make modules_install gibs dann zum schluss probs, das er die /sbin/depmod.old nicht finden kann, um die system.map übersetzen zu können.

Weil will ich den Kernel einbinden was ja geht so kommt später beim booten immer Kernel Panic: Unable to mount root fs.

Ich sage mal ich habe alles probiert, was mir eingefallen ist und einmal google rauf und runter und habe suse sogar schon neu installiert und anders Partitioniert und statt reiserfs ext3 und xfs genommen, aber ohne Erfolg.

Bootloader konfigs stimmen auch alle - also daran liegt es nicht.
Ich vermute mal stark das es am make modules_install liegt und wegen der /sbin/depmod.old die er nicht findet.

Vielleicht hat ja einer die zündene Idee und weiss woran das liegt.
Für suse 9.3 finde ich auch keine modutils, wo diese Dateien mit bei wären.

Hi,

Habe mir von vielen sagen, das der 2.4'er für Gameserver besser sein soll als der 2.6 insbesondere bei CS:Source. Weil es da wohl probleme mit der Performence und der übertragung der pakete geben soll.

Daher wollte ich den 2.4'er Kernel mal installieren, inwieweit sich dadurch die Performence steigern lässt.

Bevor ich aber an nem Produktivserver rumdoktor habe ich wie gesagt hier vmware zum testen für das Kompilieren vom Kernel.

edit: auf kernel.org gibs zwar die mod-init-tools der neusten version aber leider nur mit dem normalen depmod :?

Abgesehen davon, dass Du leistungsmäßig gegenüber einem 2.6er nichts wirst rausholen können: wozu Module? Baue alle Dateisysteme und ggf. Treiber statisch in den Kernel und entferne die "initrd" aus der Grub-Konfigurationsdatei.

Ganz würde ich ladbare Module aber nicht deaktivieren, ab und an muss man ein Modul nachladen..

Hi,

Die frage ist wohl was ich alles statisch setzen sollte in der Kernelconfig, weil es ja haufenweise als Modul deklariert ist.

Ich würde denken beim "make menuconfig" im bereich Filesystem dort alles statt mit einem "M" mit einem "*" zu versehn, sprich fest einzukompilieren.

Ich hoffe jetzt das von dir richtig interpretiert zu haben.
Wenn nicht dann bitte korrigieren.

Und wegen grub kann ich ja die menu.lst bearbeiten und das initrd dort auskommentieren - das sollte nicht das Problem sein.

EXT2, EXT3, vermutlich ReiserFS und ggf. Treiber für Deinen Raid-/SATA-/SCSI-Controller. Ich nehme noch die Netzwerkkarte dazu.

Hab soebend mal kompiliert und meine bzImage is auch dementsprechend nu groß ... 22 MB, aber mal sehn ob er dann auch booten tut :)

Hi,

Hab versucht zu booten, aber er macht das was ich erwartet habe...

Kernel Panic: unable to mount root fs

vielleicht liegt es ja an dem vmware, wo ich Suse 9.3 installiert habe.

Werde mir deine config mal anschauen.

Und kernel bauen tu ich so:

cd /usr/src/linux

make mrproper
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install

dann alles nach /boot kopieren

ln -sf vmlinuz-2.4.32 vmlinuz

mkinitrd laufen lassen

dann shutdown -r now

deine konfig bingt haufen fehler, weil die ja für 2.6'er kernel ist
mal sehn inwieweit ich die konfiguriert bekomme.

Nach einem mrproper ist meines Erachtens nach die .config gelöscht!
Sichere die vorher und kopiere sie wieder an Ort und Stelle, rufe danach nochmal make menuconfig auf.

Die Details habe ich mir nicht angesehen, aber das stach mir sofort ins Auge.

Hi,

Ich weiss das die dann weg ist :)
Daher führe ich es vorher aus und erst dann kopiere ich de .config rein.

Ich nehm meist auch die config von dem Kernel der bereits installiert ist und baue den Kernel dann, aber irgendwie will das hier nich auf dem vmware laufen.

Hatte noch nie solche probs, wie jetzt hier.

Mein verdacht ist, das ich nicht alles in den neuen Kernel mit reinbekomme, wie es bei der neuinstall der fall ist, weil ja vieles emuliert wird.

Selbst wenn ich die die .config vom bisher bereits laufenden kernl nehme die ja in /boot zu finden ist.

Hi,

Danke erstmal für deine hilfe und tips, aber beim make modules_install wird es beim Kernel 2.4.32 scheitern mangles fehlender /sbin/depmod.old :(

hast du dazu noch ne idee?

Ich unterstütze 2.4 schon seit Jahren nicht mehr und kann/will auch für Dich keine Ausnahme machen, sorry.

Hi,

So habe jetzt mal den Kernel 2.6.16.15 runtergeladen und installiert, aber auch hier kein Booten möglich:

Kernel Panic - no syncing: VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown Block(0,0)

scheint so als könnte man auf vmware nicht so ohne weiteres nen neuen Kernel basteln.

versuche es grad mit der original .config vom installierten kernel der is noch am kompilieren.

Lege mal eine seperate Partition für /boot (ext2/64MB) an, dann sollte es gehen.

Hi,

bekomme da keine separate /boot partion rein .... habs jetzt mal über yast seinen partions manager versucht, aber das will nicht so recht.

Hatte auch schon mal suse 9.3 neu installiert und eine separate boot partition gegeben aber da wollte es auch nicht so recht irgendwie.

glaub echt vmware spielt mir hier nen streich.
Hab mal bisserl gegoogelt und hab festgestellt das viele solche probs haben :?

die 64 MB für /boot könntest du dir beim swap abziehen.
Ansonsten finde ich deine configs eigentlich ok, einen schwerwiegenden Fehler habe ich auch nicht entdecken können.
(Außer reiswolffs, aber das nutzt SuSE ja schon laaaaange Zeit).
