mein server lässt sich nur noch im rescue modus booten
ein zugriff per ssh ist auch nicht mehr möglich

System suse 9.1
bootloader ist grub

Ein mitdenkendes System, welches Dir mitteilen will, dass es seit über einem Jahr nicht mehr supportet wird und endlich durch openSUSE 10.1 oder 10.2 ersetzt werden muss.

kann ich das update im rescue modus (chroot) durchführen?
und funktioniert das im laufenden betrieb: auf dem server
sind einige webs, mailpostfächer und mysql datenbanken

Die grundsätzliche Struktur würde ich gerne beibehalten.

Updaten geht nicht, hier ist eine Reinitialisierung erforderlich. Wie Du die Nutzdaten per tar, mysqldump, etc. sicherst, wurde im Forum bereits mehrfach ausführlich erläutert.
